“Will Jesus come when there are a certain amount of Christians or will He come regardless?”—Lotti
Christians believe the Bible teaches that Jesus will physically return to earth someday. One of the most often debated questions is “When?” The idea that it might be when there is “a certain number of Christians” is drawn from such phrases as “the elect” (Matt. 24:22, 31) or “the full number” (Rom. 11:25). See also Rev. 5:9; 7:4-9.
Jesus discussed the “end times” (read Matt. 24 and parallel passages). He indicated that certain things will be happening on earth before He returns. He did not give a clear timeframe, however, nor did He claim to know the exact time.
Predicting the second coming has been a growth industry for years and no less so in recent times. Often sensational and titillating, these “last days” theories typically yield complicated systems which are at best confusing and at worst misleading.
The Bible does teach this: one day every person will see Him (Matt. 24:30) and every knee will bow to Him (Phil 2:9-11)!
While we should be very interested in what the Bible says about the end of our time, we should be equally concerned that it emphasizes “being ready” (Matt. 24:42, 44; 25:13)! “Trust in the Lord . . .in all your ways acknowledge Him” (Prov. 3:5-6). “Live by faith, not by sight . . .” (II Cor. 5:7). “Seek His Kingdom first . . .tomorrow will take care of itself (Matt. 6:33-34)!
