God and Video Games

“Does the Bible say anything about video games?” –Nathan

Over 2,000 years old, the Bible doesn’t directly address many contemporary issues. Your good question raises the issue of how the Bible speaks to today’s world. Throughout its narrative, Scripture presents principles which are valid and trustworthy for every age. These principles likely relate to video games as well as many other aspects of modern life.

Video games are not necessarily inherently good or bad, but the time and energy you invest in them have consequences. Consider these principles as you think about when and how and why you play the games.

Watch what you put into your head. What you think about should be “excellent and praiseworthy” (Phil. 4:8-9) and should point you to God (Col. 3:1-4).

You will be held accountable for how you use the time and abilities you have been given (Rom. 14:10; II Cor. 5:11). Choose wisely.

Be mindful of the influences which shape your character. Do video games cultivate self-control, patience, humility, and kindness (Rom. 12:3ff; Phil. 2:1-5ff; II Pet. 1:5-9)? Do they lead you to love God and to love your “neighbor”? The “will to power” and destruction often characteristic of violent games may not be consistent with the way Christ wants you to live.

What is God’s purpose for your life? Does the investment of yourself in gaming take you in that direction? If “yes,” then there is no impediment. If “no,” then you must seriously question whether video games are for you.
